Heat Pumps’ Role in the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels

Synopsis:

If equipment utilizing fossil fuels was no longer an option, how might that change your role as an engineer, system designer, equipment manufacturer, distributor, or mechanical contractor?  To achieve NYS’s energy and environmental goals, heat pumps are being written into NYS policy as the principal alternative to fossil fuel heating & hot water for buildings.  The reaction to ConEd’s Natural Gas Moratorium, effective March 15, 2019, has highlighted some of the challenges involved in a transition away from fossil fuels, and towards the electrification of buildings.  The NYS Department of Public Service has ordered utilities to develop programs with increased incentives for heat pumps, not only for reductions in fossil fuels, but also for decreases in peak electric or peak gas demand.

This program will look at: NYS’s energy and environmental goals, the evolving policies to support these goals, and the development of programs to implement these policies. With this background, there will be a discussion of how the operating attributes of heat pumps have positioned them to become the dominant heating and cooling equipment in buildings.  Ground source, air source and water source heat pumps will all play a role, and we will look at buildings where heat pump technology is being implemented successfully.

About the Speaker:

John Ciovacco is the President of Aztech Geothermal, LLC., an engineering driven, design-build contractor of innovative clean heating & cooling systems. While running Aztech Geothermal, he often serves as a resource to building owners, construction companies, engineers, architects, and investors, regarding the latest renewable and energy efficiency technologies, government incentives, and financing options.  Most recently John has been a registered party to four public utility rate cases (i.e., National Grid, Central Hudson, O&R, ConEd) representing NY-GEO.

John is an IGSHPA Accredited Geothermal Installer, a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified Contractor, and a Certified Green Professional with the NAHB. He also serves on the Board of the New York Geothermal Energy Organization (NY-GEO). John received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Union College.
